San Jose
Costa Rica’s capital city is viewed in a variety of ways by travelers who seek different experiences. Some can’t wait to leave the crowded, often smoggy city situated in Costa Rica’s Central Valley. Others thrive on the abundance of city experiences found in this town that was literally built by the success of the area’s coffee industry.

For those who don’t mind cities, San Jose is an interesting place to explore and is getting better as a more concerned government handles problems with street crime, illegal vendors, ugly signs and billboards, and various other things that have plagued the city that grew too quickly.

The San Jose of today boasts a fairly substantial international business presence, meaning that top-notch restaurants and first-class hotels are starting to spring up throughout the city, making it a more desirable place to stay a night or two and enjoy a fine meal. The Teatro Nacional boasts some excellent productions and is worth visiting, if just to admire its magnificent architecture.

Most visitors will arrive in Costa Rica via the international airport here, so if time permits, take a few hours to explore the city before heading to the beaches or national parks. You’ll also find that San Jose is the hub of the country’s bus system, so you may find yourself with some time on your hands while waiting to board your bus to other parts of Costa Rica.
