Treking
Trekking or hiking in Costa Rica is exciting but can be a bit intimidating as well. With an abundance of national parks traversing all sorts of terrain, from rainforest to mangrove swamp, the possibilities are endless. For decades, trekkers have flocked to Costa Rica to take advantage of the abundance of open spaces and incredible scenery.

Trekking is indeed best done within the confines of the national parks, and some are more hiker-friendly than others. If you’re heading out on a multi-day backpacking trip, it’s often a good idea to take along a local guide and/or trek with a large group. While paths are well-marked in some locations, it’s easy to get lost in others, especially when fog and poor weather conditions set in. Always speak with a park ranger before you set out on a hike and when you return.

First time visitors should consider treks around the Arenal Volcano, through the amazing Monteverde Cloud Forest, or in popular Manuel Antonio or Tortuguero State Parks.
