Hotels are plentiful in Costa Rica and more are being added each year as tourism increases. Big names in luxury hotels, like Four Seasons, are starting to appear near the country's pristine beaches. Nevertheless, you'll still find plenty of privately-owned, small hotels that are lovely and boast friendly, helpful proprietors. There are many options in and around San Jose if you prefer to stay in the city. In Guanacaste and other coastal areas, you'll have the widest selection of hotels. In the more rugged inland areas, you'll find fewer hotel options.
Gone are the days when travelers could camp on Costa Rica's beaches. Lately, however, organized campgrounds have been springing up in the coastal areas for those who want to camp close to the beach. Several of Costa Rica's National Parks offer campsites to guests who prefer to commune with nature or save money on lodgings. These are available for just a few dollars per night and usually include potable water as well as restroom and shower facilities. Some are more primitive.
Costa Rica's nature lodges, also known as eco-lodges, give visitors a chance to see the country's wonderful flora and fauna up-close. Most of these lodges are located on the southern Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Generally off-the-beaten-track and close to rainforests, national parks, and other interesting ecological sites, some of these lodges are very basic. But don't let the word nature fool you. Many of these eco-lodges are quite luxurious and offer everything from gourmet meals to spa packages.
Costa Rica's interesting terrain provides a plethora of exciting experiences for backpackers. One can hike and backpack through rainforest, along rugged coastlines, or even through volcanic mountains. Overall, the country is backpacker-friendly and offers a number of clean, affordable hostels. These hostels are located throughout the country and rooms can be booked for as little as $10 USD per night. Backpackers can also take advantage of the many campsites available in Costa Rica, especially in the National Parks.
